To accept or not to accept? To leave or not to leave?
Is it better to choose a topsy-turvy lifestyle, a lack of social life and a stressful environment over the familiar but mundane, the stable but menial?
I think I better make a list of pros and cons.
Anyway quite sad, Ian Thorpe's last standing world record - the 400m freestyle - was smashed by an Arena swimsuit. By one freaking hundredth of a second! The last mark of the Australian swimming legend is now gone! :(
I googled the 400m freestyle and found that Thorpe broke his record 5 times in 3 years! It's also quite amazing how the record was lowered from 5:36.8 in 1908 to 3:40:07 in the present climate. Selective human beings managed to swim 400m 2 mins faster in a span of 100 years. Wow.

I read in the papers today that Grant Hackett is in Singapore with the Australian swim team, and Michael Phelps will be coming to Singapore too.
Ahhh Thorpe why did you retire so early? If only you were participating in this year's Olympics... then perhaps you would have been in Singapore too. Then maybe I have a 1/1000000 chance in bumping into you! Ahahaha.
But still, I'm looking forward to the Olympics swim races. It's my fav sport to watch! Too bad they're showing the races at a disgustingly inconvenient time in the morning. =x

I still remember 3 years ago I was planning to go Beijing in 2008 to see him compete and was even trying my best to save for it.
And then what happens? He decides to retire. -____-"
Haha oh well, I have moved on to obsess about other things. :) but yes Thorpe I still think you're awesome. :)
I just drank some bubble tea (just green tea + pearls) and I think it is too potent coz now my heart is beating fast! Next time I will just stick with my usual peppermint green tea.

Ahhh I can't believe it... Phelps smashed Thorpe's 200m freestyle world record!!! Right in his backyard at the World Championships in Melbourne! In Thorpe's pet event somemore!!! Phelps is now "the first man in history to go under 1:44" or so the papers say. Ahhh Thorpe! Why did you choose to retire so early?! You should have been the one making splashes in the pool!!! I thought at least your world records would leave a mark of your awesome-ness in the pool for many more years to come... but Phelps is coming up too strong! (But you know that you are still a great legend in your own right, right?)
Having said that, I really want to watch that race... it must have been such an awesome swim... even Pieter van den Hoogenband was lagging by more than 2 whole seconds! I wonder if they have it on YouTube?
To think that 3 years ago all 3 of them were in the "race of the century" and Phelps finished 3rd... haha maybe I should go to Beijing to watch Phelps instead huh. LOL.
[edit] Oh haha technology is great. There's a clip on YouTube already! It was a bit anti-climatic for me when I watched it coz I thought they were swimming the 3rd lap instead of the final lap... not very used to them starting the race from the left side. Haha!
And hahahaha coincidentally, it just so happened that the first clip I found was from KBS. Haha Korean stuff is invading my life man. (Korea's Park Tae Hwan came in 3rd after Phelps and van den Hoogenband! 대한민국!)

"As of 2:53 on Sunday afternoon I decided that I would not be swimming the world championships (to be held in Melbourne next year)," Thorpe said.
"I also made another very difficult decision -- I decided that I was actually going to discontinue my professional swimming career," he added.
And so he's retiring. After I saw the news on TV and closed my gaping mouth, I went in search of alternative news media and I must say that Wikipedia is very efficient. Super detailed and updated profile of him there. It was kind of odd to see him plastered on my desktop when I booted up the computer today. I mean, he's always there and I somehow got desensitized to him after a while, but after knowing that he was leaving the pool for good, it made me more aware and conscious of him as my desktop wallpaper, and ironically with the caption "The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you can't. Impossible is a dare."
I remember watching him on TV during the Sydney 2000 Olympics when I was still a geeky 14-year-old... wow it was just him working magic in the pool... Starting out slow but suddenly in the last lap he was leading by like one body length. I was so awed.
He was like my very first idol (and will always be). He was young and talented, I was awestruck and completely swept over by his talent (plus he was kind of cute!), and I still think he is a great swimmer. It's sad that I'll probably never get to see him race, and Australia has lost a great swimming talent, but I hope he'll be happy in whatever he does.
I still want to visit Beijing eventually, but probably not in 2008. The whole point was to go and see him compete, but since he's not racing anymore, I think I'll just splurge all the money that I saved on Taiwan. Hahaha.
