More cognitive theories:

Encoding specificity principle and mood-dependent memory
- Original context is best for recall (i.e. if you study underwater, you recall better underwater)
- Lesson learnt: Go and study in the exam hall to aid retrieval (haha not too possible)
- Mood when learning should match mood during retrieval for better recall
- Lesson learnt: If you feel miserable while studying, you should also feel miserable while taking your exam (which is not that hard to achieve haha)

And there is better recall if you generate the information yourself
- Lesson learnt: Generate your own notes yourself

Ahhh hungry... so I should feel hungry during my exam to match my mood now? Hmmm.

This is what you have in your brain:
The Central Executive (the cognitive supervisor)
Phonological loop (language comprehension, language aquisition)
Visuospatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer (integrates the phono loop and the sketchpad)

Interference with phonological loop:
- Saying "the the the" while trying to remember items
- Recalling of verbal material suffers
- Lesson learnt: Do not talk when studying

Proactive interference:
- Material learnt before interferes with what you want to learn
- Release from proactive interference - reduction from this interference by introducing a vast switch in categories
- Lesson learnt: After studying subject A, switch to a distinctly different subject to prevent proactive interference.

Haha 25 more hours to cram everything into my brain!

Anyway, my mom decided that she will not iron our clothes for us anymore and we have to start ironing our own clothes w.e.f last week. I don't know how to iron! The only chores I know how to do are folding the clothes and washing the dishes. I've never ironed anything before, with the exception of handkerchieves (super easy to iron) and my Developmental Psych textbook. Haha now I sound like some prissy spoilt brat who never does household chores. But I guess we gotta learn how to iron someday right? So yeah. If I gotta iron, I'll iron.

Check out my maiden ironing effort!!!

Some wrinkles here and there (the shirt itself has some gathers) but hey, it's hard to iron a shirt!!! I don't know how to iron shirts!!!! Help!!!! Anyone with ironing experience, care to share how to iron shirts and jeans?

Hahaha maybe I'll just wear the same clothes for the whole week now so that I'll have less to iron... You'll see me in the same wrinkled clothes everytime. Hahaha!

I love the Pepperidge Farm cookie! Yum.

I'm going to turn my blog into some snazzy academic blog hahaha. So don't bother reading until after 6 Dec. 2006, coz it'll all be boring stuff. Wahahaha.

Aloe Vera - emollient, laxative
Cayenne - Stimulates blood flow, increases metabolic rate, good for circulatory and digestive system and also if you have too much gas in your stomach (flatulence).
Chamomile - Aids digestion, mild sedative, anti-inflammatory
Chasteberry - Restores hormonal balance in women, good for PMS
Echinacea - 3 species, E. angustifolia, E. pallida, E. purpurea. Approved ones are Echinacea pallida root and Echinacea purpurea herb.
Good for lots of things. Respiratory and UTI kablah kablah, also to heal surface wounds
Is also an immunostimulant. --> has no direct bactericidal or bacteriostatic properties. Whatever that means.
Stimulates the immune system. RAWR Echinacea is boring.

Ephedra is ma huang, contains ephedrine (which will constrict the blood vessels) and pseudoehpedrine (which will dilate airways).
Feverfew - Also for women's menstrual cycles. Reliefs migraines. Active ingredient parthenolide.
Garlic is good for you. Has antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral properties. Has cardiovascular effects. Can thin blood, can stimulate immune system. Can clear congested lungs....
Active ingredient Allicin, which gives garlic its stinky smell (pooh).
Used as a support to dietary measures and a preventive measure for age dependent vascular changes...
Side effects: GI symptoms, like when useful organisims in your tummy gets killed. Warfarin + Garlic = blood clotting times doubled = bad.
4g of fresh minced garlic bulb a day is good for you (pooh, even 1g is too much for me).

Typing from my notes... I need paper! I don't have paper to write my notes on. I need to scribble to feel like I'm actually studying!

Goodbye Thorpey.

"As of 2:53 on Sunday afternoon I decided that I would not be swimming the world championships (to be held in Melbourne next year)," Thorpe said.

"I also made another very difficult decision -- I decided that I was actually going to discontinue my professional swimming career," he added.

And so he's retiring. After I saw the news on TV and closed my gaping mouth, I went in search of alternative news media and I must say that Wikipedia is very efficient. Super detailed and updated profile of him there. It was kind of odd to see him plastered on my desktop when I booted up the computer today. I mean, he's always there and I somehow got desensitized to him after a while, but after knowing that he was leaving the pool for good, it made me more aware and conscious of him as my desktop wallpaper, and ironically with the caption "The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you can't. Impossible is a dare."

I remember watching him on TV during the Sydney 2000 Olympics when I was still a geeky 14-year-old... wow it was just him working magic in the pool... Starting out slow but suddenly in the last lap he was leading by like one body length. I was so awed.

He was like my very first idol (and will always be). He was young and talented, I was awestruck and completely swept over by his talent (plus he was kind of cute!), and I still think he is a great swimmer. It's sad that I'll probably never get to see him race, and Australia has lost a great swimming talent, but I hope he'll be happy in whatever he does.

I still want to visit Beijing eventually, but probably not in 2008. The whole point was to go and see him compete, but since he's not racing anymore, I think I'll just splurge all the money that I saved on Taiwan. Hahaha.

Fans all over the world will never forget you!!! *heart*

Yay accomplishment of the day:
I managed to persevere and finish reading the two articles that I set out to finish by today. Even though the 2nd article was super long and dreary. Even though the thought of watching Xman was constantly infiltrating my brain! Freaking 40+ pages of media theories X_______X Seriously boring.

But I love Xman! I'm convulsing with laughter whenever I watch it. Hahaha. I found someone who has the episodes with the Shinhwa members and it's freaking funny! *heart*

Haha this is like the first time I actually finished reading an article that is 40 pages long! Usually I either (i) don't read at all, or (ii) give up reading halfway.
I am impressed with myself! Wahahaha.

Well my actual agenda for today should be:
1. Finish the 2 readings for NM2101 (I plan to read 2 per day so that when my 2101 exam comes, I'd have finished reading everything. But at this rate, I think I will just not finish reading everything hahahaha.)
2. Study 6 chapters of Cognitive Psych...

...which I obviously did not do. Reading is just taking too much of my time! Coz I keep getting distracted and the words just flow in and then flow out again and I have to re-read that line/paragraph. I used to like reading... storybooks! Yeah the good old days of reading Enid Blyton. Storybooks I can read quickly. Readings and textbooks?! ZZZZZZZZZ. Hai maybe my processing speed is slower when it comes to non-fiction.

And I think I am more efficient when I 临时抱佛脚. Like right now, I don't have a pressing need to go full steam... The motivation to work hard is not there! I need a in-your-face kind of dateline to vrooom ahead.

Starting to dislike staying at home during the day. :(

Basshya! Fighting! Think of the fun I'll have in December!

Sigh, I wish I understood Korean.

AND I SHOULD BE STUDYING!
I read a grand total of... 5 pages today. Woohoo.

Oooh what a slippery person! The most greasy Dangyunhaji segment I've watched, but it's freaking hilarious! Hahaha. I'm trying to drag out the pace of watching Xman so that I can watching enjoy it longer!

Ego: All done! All reports handed up! All presentations done! WOOHOO!!! And I think I did pretty okay most of the time... if I don't think about my Psych term papers.

Id: Time to reward yourself! Time to watch YouTube! Watch YouTube watch YouTube watch YouTube watch YouTube watch YouTube... watch Xman watch Xman watch Xman watch Xman... watch TAR watch TAR watch TAR... watch ANTM ANTM ANTM! And go and waste your time surfing the Superstar webpage!

Superego: What!!!!!!! Study study study study study study studystudystudystudy study study and catch up on your horrendous readings... there are a lot of readings waiting for you... study study study study!

Ego: .................... zz z z z zzzzzzzzzz. *snore*

Id: Slack slack slack slack slack slack slack slack!

Superego: Study study study study study study study!!!

Id: NUA!

Ego: Sian. I am just waiting for exams to be over.

Id: Your basic instinct is to bum around!

Superego: As the moral branch of your personality, I say you must study! *sits heavily on Id*

Id: OOOMPH!!! What on earth?! Say, Ego, just go with your instincts.

Superego: Ego! You are the one making rational decisions! Think clearly first!

Ego: .................. ?!?!?! I am being bombarded!!! Help!!!
Sian, I still have to go to work later...

I was horrified to learn that Publications Graphics and Design and Biological Psychology had lecture timings that CLASHED! *cue thunder and doom* That's a big big problem for me... there's a possibility that I have to stay for an additional semester just because I can't fulfill the requirements to graduate. Sigh, I'm trying to find a way out, and I think I might have found a way out, but I still need to confirm if the Plan B module would be accepted as one of the three level-3000 mods that I have to take.

For an institution as big as NUS who offers so many Arts modules, there's such a limited choice of NM level-3000 modules to choose from! If you don't have the pre-requisites (like me) you can't take half the modules offered.

But sigh, I really wanted to take Publications Graphics and Design... Should have taken Bio Psych instead of Cognitive Psych this sem. In any case, I don't want to waste more money staying for one extra sem just because I can't get my MCs.

Groupmate who didn't attend the lectures requested for my notes to copy. Hmmm? Why should I let mere acquaintances who don't bother to attend lectures freeload off me?

Well sadly I agreed to lend her my notes.

My dear self, you must really get some backbone!

Take this test at Tickle

Siyi, your signature color is Sterling Blue

You've got a good head on your shoulders and you're not afraid to use it. Serious, intellectual types like you (Intellectual?!?!?) meet their match with a cool color that sparkles with the same striking intelligence as you do. That's why Sterling Blue is the ideal match for you! This is not to say that you've always got your head in a book. Not by any stretch. While you may not be the person at the party kicking off the karaoke (OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ROTFL!! Okay I admit that is true if I am with strangers), you're probably the one starting up stimulating conversations and making your cohorts chuckle with your quick wit. You're likely to have an insatiable curiosity that's catchy, and friends who know that you are a great person to turn to when they need a logical head to help them sort through their problems. So keep it up with your sterling hue of blue. You probably have a way of keeping things deep that people truly appreciate!
What's Your Signature Color?

I just burned my entire weekend on my two NM projects... Spent the entire rainy Saturday in school. Oh well. Last week of school, and this week's gonna be quite a slack week. The calm before the storm!

Nothing much's going on, so here's a few thousand words:

At Pam's 21st party...

When we meet, it's always about food (okay this is not a very foody pic)...

Bridge...

and taking photos!

That's us trying to squash our heads to fit into the photo

That's not some kind of visual trick, the big cup is really bigger than the small cup.

Ichee!

This bunch of balloons was supposed to be some kind of landmark to guide us to the venue but Yanzz and I got horribly lost and made a huge detour round Mount Sinai!!! Garh.

More random stuff

Gillian made me a huge something and I have no space to keep it. Hahaha.

Cute heart! (and the hand's my sister's)

And I found a use for this heart... Let Grimace sit on it!

Now snoozing on it

My two Grimaces!
That's the fake Grimace occupying authentic Grimace's old place

And Hamster drinking water! Hehe so cute.

I've got a video somewhere of Hamster running around...

I thought today's lecture on Media Law was one of the best lectures I've attended in the past 2.5 years in NUS! Very interactive, intellectually-stimulating class. Felt rather disturbed at some parts (especially the bit on caning) but it was a great lecture! At least it made me think. Hahaha. Of course, kudos to all those who shared their opinions and weren't afraid to express them. I bet the class won't be half as interesting without them.

And I am screwed... Only studied the TCM bit for my test tomorrow (which means I go to school for less than an hour again)... oh well, to console myself,
1. I have S/U-ed this module
2. The test is only 10%.

We call this cognitive dissonance, folks! (or do we not? Attitude and behaviour not in sync, no?)

Hahaha X-man cracks me up! Especially Xman #40, the Pattaya episode! Freaking funny especially when they have to throw each other off the floating platform... hahahaha I was just laughing in front of the computer screen while watching... Pity they don't show the parts when they reveal who is the Xman... I'd like to know who the mole is!

What a horrible time to get started on something... I'm supposed to be studying for my Comp Med test on Friday! Okay no more Xman till after exams. Lots of things to watch after exams but I think there might be a problem now since YouTube suspended all those who had the dramas that I wanted to watch. Looking forward to December! My Motivation! Ooomph!!

I think I am going to burst a vessel trying to read the draft that one of my group mates uploaded. Phrasing - Boo. Structure and flow - Boo. Grammar - DOUBLE BOO! I cannot stand bad grammar (even though my grammar isn't all that perfect) but simple things like "Recreation" (not "RecreationS"), "staff" (not "StaffS"), and "came up with an idea" (not "came out with an idea")...?! At this level we shouldn't even be making this kind of simple mistakes! Argh!

And as a side note, I really can't stand people who pluralize everything. Like, adding an S doesn't mean that it's plural! And sometimes there's no need to use the plural form so stop adding S's all over the place!

One of my lecturers said that the feedback from employers was that Arts students can't write properly. How ironic. But now I'm starting to think it's true. Yah lah I'm just anal about this coz I just don't like bad grammar. Zero tolerance for bad grammar! It's one of those inexplainable things. Plus it disrupts the flow of reading. Super distracting.

For goodness sake, do put in some thought before you start writing! Good English people, good English.

Haven't done these quizes thingees for so long... though this one seems familiar. Think I took it before.

You Have A Type B+ Personality

You're a pro at going with the flow
You love to kick back and take in everything life has to offer
A total joy to be around, people crave your stability.

While you're totally laid back, you can have bouts of hyperactivity.
Get into a project you love, and you won't stop until it's done
You're passionate - just selective about your passions

I am trying to be civil but it's really hard when you have a sneaky, tattletale sister who goes around being generally annoying. Kids just can't shut their mouth. *grits teeth*

I'm stuffed! Just ate a humongous plate of Hokkien Mee for lunch... I feel like a stuffed chicken or a stuffed pig. Those kind where you stuff the chicken with some herbs and whatnot before you send them of for cooking.

Been eating way too much these few days! I better start embarking on an exercise routine! Ever since I stopped swimming I have no tan, I become flabby, my face is rounder and I have a double chin in photos!

Had oodles of fun at Pam's party yesterday! Haha the word oodles sounds cute. OOODLES! Of fun! Thanks Pam! And my videos turned out to be jerky. Why why why?!?! So annoying! It's like the video keeps hiccuping.

The week ahead sounds busy... Frankly, I'm a bit worried for my NM2219 project. Only 1 week left to the presentation and report and we haven't really done anything yet?! It's like kind of hanging in the air... Or maybe it's because I've been missing out on a lot of meetings coz they always have their meetings on Thursday evening when I have to rush off to work.

And it's not nice reading other people's personal things. Nor is it nice digging through other people's personal stuff. Though now I am not as pissed as I would be when I was younger. I am okay. I am more mellow (haha). But still. It is not nice.

I realized that I don't like interrogative (or inquisitive) questions much.

The problem with technology

is that
1. The E: drive conked out after I tried to open a CD and thus made the computer lag. Now I have a broken E: drive.

2. Blogger refuses to publish my lengthy entries due to some odd reason and so the only other way I can publish them is to go to school to blog! (By lengthy I estimate it to be >400 words. Anyone else has this problem?)

2.1. And I've tried publishing on the other desktop PC and my sister's laptop, but it doesn't work! Idiotic Blogger. Or idiotic SingNet, whichever is the culprit. Why restrict my creative juices?!?!?!?!?!?!?! (okay not that I have a lot of creative juices to begin with... but why restrict my rambling?!?!!)

3. Because my computer is laggy (i.e. Windows takes a million years to load), to prevent loss of valuable data, I have to back up my files and that is a lot of files to back up!!!

4. Lots of presentations and report deadlines coming up, so if the PC dies now........................ I think I will go and bang a wall.

PS: Ichee folks, you can download the photos of my bday from yousendit. Link's on my MSN nickname.
PPS: Gaassssy folks, I've uploaded the photos to our gmail account.

21st Birthday celebration

I like the words on the balloons! Hahaha. It was quite hard trying to tie them though. I pumped all the balloons myself and I burst 3 balloons!

After some simple balloon decorations and a party banner.

Attacking the chicken wings
(See I have an orange top and orange shoes!)

The fire was too big and the chicken wings became chao ta.

Us enjoying the food

Then we decided to play around with my party hats...

Wacky party hat poses

Using party hats as beaks and horns!
(Half the time I look like a unicorn in my party hat hahaha!)

I have a pokey head and 2 ice-cream cones LOL. :)

Since Mabel didn't go to Genting with us and hence she doesn't have a jump-in-the-air pose, we decided to take one for her...

FAILED!!! (but not as many times as Gillian lah hahaha)

PASSED!!! Yay!!!
(We are getting quite pro at this huh?)

Haha and also a group jump! But a bit hard to coordinate lah. :)

REHK!

Playing with sparklers!

My family

Now with grandma

Ichee! Missing Corinne and Xiuhui!

Gaassssy! Missing Yuanshan and Shwen!

My relatives
and my semi-successful orange theme!!!

Us sitting around and enjoying the cake

And no cake-smashing allowed!!!

Hahaha the t-shirt bra from Gaassssy!
Since Ichee gave me vouchers for the same purpose I shall now have 2 t-shirt bras!!! Very nice to touch man!!! :)

Oh hahaha this is freaking hilarious. We were talking about being random somehow, and...

That's us being er, RANDOM. LOL!!! :)

The 7 of us tried to form my name after our highly successful random formation!

*buzzer sound*
S is doubling over with laughter!!!

Ah.... can you see the letters that spell my name? Being "I" is sure easy hahahaha.
"S" looks like she's gonna eat me up LOL!!!

There was also the "yo yo yo" trying-to-rap mini-performances and the harmonizing birthday song! Wished I had taken more photos with everyone though. So that concludes my birthday celebration, it was a blast! :)

Oh yep and also a little tribute to my hamster!

That's me and Hamster
(one of the rare times when she doesn't bite!)

Happy 1st Birthday Hamster!

Legally an adult now

Looking back on my 21 years, I must say I am pretty pleased with the way I have turned out. That sounds narcissistic but I think at least I can say that I've turned out to be someone whom my parents can be proud of. I have a sensible head on my shoulders, I don't cause them any unnecessary grief, I am mostly a responsible and independent kid. Of course that doesn't mean I'm the perfect kid - my dad always complains that the electricity bill is getting more and more expensive whenever I conk out on my bed while leaving the lights in the study room turned on, and I think my mom still has urges to smack me every now and then when I don't toe the line, but yep, by and large I have been a rather decent specimen of the human species.

They've given me so much over the years, they've made me into who I am today, and while I subconciously know all the love care and concern that they have given me and my sisters (and sometimes taking it for granted), I have never really taken a moment to appreciate all that they've done.

And my sisters. My sister is like my all-in-one companion. I don't even remember a time when she wasn't around. We grew up together, played together, fought, quarrelled, laughed and talked nonsense, now I complain to her, discuss things with her, and we've got a Taiwan trip to look forward to. And even though I am always going on about some annoying habit of my little sister's, the house will be a lot quieter without her around. I am really glad that I have them for my sisters. Blood is always thicker than water right?

Since I turn 21 today, I resolve to be a better daughter, a better sister (and TRY to stop screaming at my little sister), a better friend, and a better person.

What a rather sombre way to start the day, not at all like how I envisioned it to be.

And Hamster's turns one too! :) If one hamster year is 2 human weeks, Hamster would be around 26 hamster-years old now. Wow, my Hamster's older than me! And today she bit me on my finger and toe. Yes, my TOE! RAWR!

Been rather busy with my project report (it was due 31 Oct), and I am stressing out over my breaking news assignment because I have absolutely no freaking idea what to write on. PFFFFFFT!!! Photos soon! Soon!!! And since it was my birthday I demand that all photos taken at the party be sent to me!!! Hahaha. If you're holding on to any, SEND!

Happy Birthday to Me!!! :)

Woah, been eating way too much these few days. Pure decadence man. Just had all the leftover satay and chicken wings for dinner. And the leftover birthday cake. I finally got to eat a thick slab of my birthday cake. Due to my poor cake cutting skills I only managed to eat a thin slice on Sunday. Hahaha. Anyway I like the nuts in the cake. It's supposed to be chocolate mousse with nuts - Hazelnuts? Walnuts? Nutty nuts? - but can't taste the mousse much. Hahaha. Thought of getting a durian cake originally but didn't know if anyone hates durian. Hee. :)

My poor stomach's gonna explode. *kaboom*

Anyway thanks to all who came on Sunday, I lub you all deep deep. *heart* Thanks for making your way to faraway Pasir Ris, for the company, for all your generosity! If I am to die tomorrow (touch wood) I will die knowing that I am a very lucky and blessed person!

Thank you my friends - Ichee, you girls brightened up my JC life! Hahaha. Thanks for letting me experience the warmth of your friendship! Wah really miss those days man... Bridging, eating, sleeping during lectures and tutorials (mostly me doing the sleeping), hotel stays, and anyone still remembers Ooga Ooga?! In Ooga Ooga, Ichee means "US!" Eight "Ich" makes one Ichee. So yeah we'll always be one "US!" right? Hahahaha. :)

German Gaassssy - Love all the memories that we've shared, no words can express how happy and blessed I am to have you guys. I feel like I can just let go and be one crazy jumping monkey (and part-time shrieking banshee) in front of you all. LOL. :) Next year marks the 10th year of us knowing each other! And may we continue to be as dingdong and madcap as ever! Hahahaha. Thanks for all the happy times, crazy times, wild times, the cruise, the Genting trip, our KTV sessions - no bond is deeper than those forged through times of craziness (my own theory hahaha).

My family and relatives - my little sis who gave me a bottle of lucky stars (but I ended up folding the stars myself! hahaha) and my sister who was my personal photograher of the night. Hee. :) Most importantly I wanna thank my parents, especially my mom who really put in a lot of effort into preparing this party. She bought and cooked everything herself, and was busy barbequing all the food throughout the night, and after the whole thing she was busy washing up and clearing the place. Tirelessly. Mom's great! And I am loved! :)

The only small regret I have is that I didn't take enough photos!!! I love photos coz they capture those fleeting moments of joy and imperfections. Didn't get to take photos with each and every one of you too. Didn't even get decent photos of me and my sisters!

Okay this is becoming too much like a boring acceptance speech. Photos in next entry!

(I'm really pissed at Blogger, been trying to post my entries since last night but I don't know why when I hit "publish post" all I see is "This page cannot be displayed"! So due to some Blogger cockup I have to split my entry into two. Bugger Blogger. PFFFFFFFT!!!)
