What was 2010 to you?
2010 to me was about personal growth, learning about myself, falling in love and learning how to love, having my heart crushed suddenly and cruelly, learning how to pick up the pieces, learning how to let go and move on (still gotta work on this one).
It was about seeing how friendships can be so fragile, how something so minor can escalate into soured relations. It was about being caught in the middle, it was about learning that one wrong decision, one bad move, can change everything. It was about the biggest regret of my life.
It was about secretly hoping. It was about disappointments, again and again. It was about the tears I've shed, the days I would sit in front of my computer at work with tears rolling down. It was about constantly thinking and missing of someone. I got the 轰轰烈烈的爱情 that I once sought for, only to realize that with 轰轰烈烈的爱情 also brings 轰轰烈烈的痛苦。
It was about how I had to sneak around, how I had to lie. It was about bittersweet memories. It was about learning that "If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it!" (quote I got from Twitter.)
It was about straddling that fine line between friendship and love. It was about listening and encouraging, and giving, giving, giving. It was about learning to forgive. And most importantly, it was about learning to come to peace with myself.
2010 was all about K-pop. It was about how K-pop turned mainstream. Everybody and their younger sister and pet turtle is into K-pop nowadays. The Korean wave is sweeping Singapore and its teens into a frenzy but truthfully, I'm starting to get a little sick and tired of it. I miss the days when only a few people could understand what I was talking about I was babble about K-pop. It was like some kind of secret code, one that elevated you into a funky inner circle that was the bubblegum world of K-pop. Those were the passionate, die-hard fans.
It was about how Korean acts are dropping in to our humble shores as frequently as how Singaporeans drop in to JB. I went for an unprecedented number of K-pop concerts/showcases this year. Count 'em - B2ST (first row seats! shook hands with all 6 of them!), 2AM, 4minute, CN Blue, that massive 2-hour shrieking and neck craning that was the K-pop Night Concert, and of course most recently, I met 2PM, missA and MBLAQ up close and personal! (Chansung and Junho even said 안녕하세요 to me haha.) Even though I only played a small part by holding up the script for them to read, it was a cool experience nonetheless! That said, I hope groups don't swing by Singapore so frequently in 2011. It is very taxing for fans. And not to mention the money fans have to fork out to see them perform!
It was also about learning the Korean language, although it is with much embarrassment that I can only converse in very very very very verrrrrrrrrrrrry basic Korean after 1 year of classes.
2010 was about Jay Chou's epic concert. No other K-pop concert I've attended this year can beat his epic concert in July, seriously. I think it was the funnest and most high concert I've attended.
2010 was about maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. It was about having the discipline to exercise, till it became part of my lifestyle. I met 4 ex-colleagues over the course of the past few weeks and they all commented that I look different. I concluded that it was because my face is now less chubby and slightly sharper! And the hair. The hair is longer.
2010 was the year my hard disk crashed, bringing along with it a ton of my memories in the form of photos. :( (Reminder to backup your files - it's the end of the year, so back up the entire year's worth of data now!)
2010 was about the worst holiday of my life.
2010 was also about getting hooked onto online shopping, and that is a terrible addiction. I should stop before I become broke.
So I guess that more or less sums up what 2010 was to me. This year, I've not done anything exciting. Last year I said I wanted to go speed dating for my "do one new thing each year" but it didn't materialize. So I've decided. That I want to climb a mountain. (!!!!!!!!!!!!) If not next year, then at least in the next 2-3 years!
1) Climb a mountain (we are aiming for Mount Kinabalu)
2) Do something about that Phillips Securities account and start looking seriously into letting my money grow for me!
3) Get a pair of new spectacles
4) See a derm about my ugly back
5) Have the discipline to maintain my exercise regime
6) Embrace new challenges that may or may not arise in my job
I hope 2011 will bring better things. I've had a good break for the last week of 2010. 2010 was not a fantastic year but I shall end it on a good note and spend it in the company of my wonderful friends, and also start the new year with a bang with my great pals and KTV. Thank God for blessing me with awesome friends. :) That is truly something to be grateful for in 2010. :)
W: 我觉得你还是放不下。
SY: 我自己也觉得我自己放不下。
I am so easy to read, like an open book!
(You can take one minute to love somebody but probably an entire lifetime to forget them.)
***
W: Why did you all want to keep it underground?
SY: I'm not the one who wanted to keep it underground!
W: I know why... because it's not stable. If it's stable, it wouldn't be over in a month.
Harsh words to hear but there is some truth in it. Got together too hastily without knowing each other better.
But I had no chance to cultivate a stable relationship in the first place?!
Maybe it was doomed right from the start.
So maybe I shouldn't have defied the natural order of things when Man Utd lost the championship!
Yes I know nobody likes to read mopey self-absorbing evaluations about some stupid thing that happened in the past. W was in the loop back then and today we were talking and she started asking me about how it all began. I still feel sad when I think about it.
I've also concluded that it is better for men to do the hunting. Let them do the chasing. Ladies, enjoy the chase. Do not offer yourself to them on a pedestal. Do not appear too eager. You can drop hints but wait for them to take the bait. If you are too obliging and too easy to get, they will not appreciate you. They will take you for granted.
Ok emo moment over. I managed to stream the SBS and KBS Gayo shows rather smoothly this year. Gonna miss the MBC one tomorrow though, and such a pity, because the lineup for the MBC one looks the best out of the three! :(

Wah, has it's been a year since I last spotted Jay Chou at radio?
How can this be a year ago?! To me it seemed like it was only yesterday when I saw him! OK maybe not yesterday... but at least a couple of months or half a year. Definitely not ONE YEAR! Goodness, if anything, 2010 felt like it flew by even faster than 2009. Is that even possible?
Like when I read last year's entries, they all feel like it happened recently. And it's strange, because quite a bit happened this year too, so by right there should be an appropriate distance that you will feel between last year's and this year's events, but I think that intangible thing called TIME is starting to blend and blur...
Maybe we should all adjust our concept of time... and start thinking in blocks of 10 years instead. Then we would correspondingly think that 1 year is equivalent to 1 month and 10 years would just about feel like 1 year. Forward planning eh? 10-year plans!

I found out quite by chance that a colleague who is in her late 30s is a rather accomplished artist who is holding her first solo exhibition. Her art is cute, colourful and whimsical, and the pieces sell for a few hundred to a couple of thousand! That's like my whole month's salary. :(
Ah, I am always impressed and in awe with people who are accomplished in both their professional lives and their personal ones. How do they do it?! Obviously you will have to find your talent in something, and you have to be respectably decent or outstanding at that something. I think it's rather sad that I am good in nothing. Example. When you go for interviews, one question that may pop up is "What are your hobbies/interests? What do you like to do in your free time? Tell me more about yourself." For those with obvious talents, they can say, "Oh, I paint in my free time. I'm an amateur artist and I'm working towards getting my first collection up." Tadah, suddenly candidate becomes so much more appealing and exciting. For it shows that they are all-rounded, well-balanced individuals, and interesting people just tend to attract people more.
Which is very unlike what I am - although I am also a perfectly normal, well-adjusted human being, I do not have any obvious talent. Which is sad! Because it makes for an uninteresting personality and an uninteresting life! And hence this enviousness sets in. Call it Talent Envy! I'm good for nothing except surfing the Internet, playing Bejeweled (and even for that, I suck), mindless clicking on Facebook and online shopping. Sigh! Pathetic I know! What would I have achieved by the time I reach my mid- or late 30s? NOTHING! And I am not looking to climb the corporate ladder and realize at the end of the day my personal life is a huge, big, gaping hole. A void.
I think I want to climb a mountain so that when people ask me "How have you been?" I can tell them - "I'm planning to climb a mountain!" Anyone game for the mountain? I'm pretty serious! (Of course, aim low first, aim for Mt Kinabalu! At least I didn't say Bukit Timah.)
I need to get rid of this stupid ulcer under my tongue! WHEN WILL I BE ULCER-FREE?!?!?! Sobs.
Happy that tomorrow is a non-work day! :) Sundays like this rrrrrrock! :) One week of rest, relaxation and fun awaits! (Time, please crawl along slowly like how you did for last week. Thank you.)

Christmas is drawing near... and the weather is cooler. It actually feels pretty cool on this Sunday afternoon! (Yes! I am awake!) I suppose this is as close as a cold Christmas that we can get!
It has been a whole week of pigging out. Department parties, meeting with friends and lots of eating. And of course, the arrival of the long awaited 13-month bonus. My colleague said that we slog for one entire year just for this day - Bonus Day! Haha couldn't agree more. Unfortunately the bonus loot seems to disappear as quickly as it came. Sigh. And I can't wait for my one-week break. Looking forward to lazing, nua-ing, going out, having some fun and catching up on my video watching.
New position wise, there have been no further updates so far, approvals still pending, so nothing to do but to wait, wait, wait...
Been thinking of how 2010 was. Pangs of loneliness hits at times. Reflecting and emo-ing...
Anyway is anyone keen on trying out Freshness Burger at Nex? Read the rave review in ST Urban and I'm drooling hahaha.

I'm going to be part of this massive project starting from next year onwards, and it will be challenging no doubt. It was literally an opportunity that dropped down from the sky and into my lap. I got the call on Monday and today I am one foot into the proverbial door. I would say that the status now is still pending, but I'm really thankful for this opportunity - it came just at the right time, when I was looking around for jobs and planning to move from my current position by hopefully early next year. It's a great chance to develop and grow my career in other areas, and I get to learn and experience new things.
Gotta thank my lucky stars and whatever divine force out there, for sometimes I feel rather undeserving of all these chances I get. I mean, other than the fact that I keep complaining that my life is bland and boring, being me is not too bad, if one is to take stock of my life. I've had a pretty much smooth sailing life so far - had a good education, never encountered any major mishaps or hiccups, no accidents, in the pink of health, have great friends, have a job, can support myself and can afford to eat good food sometimes - ok love life not so great, but that is just one small aspect. Compared to many others, I think my life isn't all that bad, if we're talking about being contented with what you have.
I may end up hating my new role but I should epitomise my blog address yeah, and be an optimistic-pessimist. :D So it is with much trepidation that I embark on this new journey into the unknown and start over as a greenhorn! 2011 just started looking a lot more exciting and challenging! But boy I am glad to be rid of my current job as the default go-to person/errand girl/cleaner/helper/maid in the department soon.
On a totally unrelated note. I SHOULD STOP BUYING STUFF ONLINE! I keep visiting blogshops and I end up buying pretty dresses that I have no occasion to wear to. Sigh, first Gmarket, now blogshops. Friends, please get married soon so that I can wear my dresses to your weddings! Hahaha. :D

So I was lunching with my colleagues and we were talking about this helpful boy who is going to leave the company soon. My colleague E remarked that this helpful boy volunteered to help her carry some heavy stuff - a very rare occurrence for a guy working at our office to volunteer to help, I assure you. (Most of the time we double up as coolies. Sad life.)
Colleague W then remarked, somewhat matter-of-factly - of course, it's because he's a Christian.
My question is then, are you implying that the only reason one is helpful is because they are Christians? Therefore non-Christians are expected to be unhelpful? One thing that I really dislike from such fleeting statements is that they imply that non-Christian people are therefore incapable of doing good, or being compassionate, or do not have strong moral values, blah blah blah. It's like making some random correlation just based on one attribute of a person. I find it condescending and somewhat insulting.
I have another colleague who says that he only supports artistes who are Christians. I don't see why one must make a distinction like that. So, non-Christian artistes who may work even harder - they get ignored and are not deserving of your support?
Of course, there are plenty of awesome people who happen to be Christians (or belong to some other religion). No doubt their beliefs and upbringing have affected the way they live their lives. But there are also plenty of awesome people who do not have any religious affiliations and are no less awesome than those who do. And to just completely dismiss these people just because they do not believe in what you do is unfair.
There was also a recent Straits Times Saturday feature on teen gangs and how various religions are trying to reach out to them, so that with some spiritual guidance in their lives, they won't stray onto the wrong path. Nothing wrong with spiritual guidance of course. In fact I think spiritual guidance does good to errant youth who are trying to find direction in life, but the article also prompted a flurry of replies from humanists who wrote in to state their opinions along the lines of "One does not need to have a religion to lead a good, happy and meaningful life and to have compassion for our fellow human beings". Agree, agree and agree. I don't believe that I am in any way a worse person than someone who has spiritual guidance in their life.
Overzealous people insinuating that if you are a non-believer and therefore you must suck get me annoyed with their pompous self-righteousness.
Caveat: Nothing against Christianity or having a religion or whatever, I do not mean to be offensive in any way.
